Email Marketing Needs To be Personal

John W. Furst

I just wrote a short forum reply for a friend on Triiibes.com who had asked,
“How can I increase the open rate of my newsletter?”

Here it is, I am sharing it with you.

A good point in time to deliver another email marketing tip after having stopped that series of articles for some time. Maybe I should revive the carnival? I have to think about it and check how many spam submissions I have received in the meantime. Well, I am preparing a guide, a tutorial for email marketing anyway.

The business in question is a European based specialist for colors trends and consults with designers in fashion, home design, …

Dear Carolina,

I find the content and design of your newsletter rather intriguing. However it's a constant challenge to keep readers engaged and interested over a longer period of time. Let me give you a couple of bullets to think about.

Just to start off the discussion here.

  • Make it more personal!

Have an editor, a spokesperson write the newsletter in a colloquial tone. Introduce that character as a person with a back-story, and also address the reader on the personal level. An email is communication from one person to another. A newsletter should not be an exception.

What about the idea of following the Editor - James or Jane on his or her personal journey through the universe of color and time.

  • Increase the frequency. Once a month is too infrequent to maintain and strengthen the relationship with your readers.

You don't want to be perceived as the 57th agency which sends yet another trend report. You want to be perceived as “friend” who helps the reader through the jungle, who offers effective solutions for whatever the biggest problem in this industry is.

Go beyond of just being a reporter.

How To Choose A Service Provider Or Tools For Email Marketing

Email Tools For Marketing Recently many — especially — small business owners asked me how to chose a good provider or software for email marketing. A good reason to write a blog post about this topic. Read below what I have told them.

A permission based list of email subscribers is the most valuable asset you should build with your online marketing efforts. So what are the right tools to get started with. Technically you have three choices:

(1) Sending your email promotions yourself with desktop software.
(2) Sending your emails with server based software from your servers.
(3) Outsourcing to a trusted email marketing tools service provider.

When using (1) or (2) you will find yourself quickly involved with technical issues and you will run into all sorts of restrictions and limitations due to various anti-spam measures. Getting your emails delivered is not only a technical issue anymore. It has become a matter of trust between email service and Internet service providers. (Thanks to all those reckless email spammers.) Sending your email campaigns using a reputable service provider increases the chances that your emails are delivered and protects you from having your own email server or domain blocked as a result of false spam complaints.

It might look more inexpensive to make a one-time purchase for software that handles all your future email campaign needs compared to choosing a service that charges $30 a month. But in reality you will pay a very heavy price for trying to be cheap.

Any good email marketing service provider will take care of the issues that ensure your messages get delivered into the inbox of your subscribers. They also will make sure that their service is up-to-date technically and follows legal requirements like the CAN-SPAM act.

Email Marketing Tips - History

Update on Feb. 8, 2013: Deleted all entries with outdated tips or broken links.

I just got word that we are discontinuing the Email Marketing Tips Blog Carnival. The email marketing tips 16th edition has been the last edition so far.

Update: The carnival is continuing. Read edition 18 of email marketing tips next.

Why?

The reasons are twofold.

(1) The top dogs are not contributing their blog posts anymore.

(2) If we have to scan the Web for good content ourselves, what is a blog carnival good for then?

As the quality of carnivals has declined over the last couple of month so has the effectiveness and resulting traffic.

Email Marketing Tips - Edition 16

Update on Feb. 8, 2013: Deleted all entries with outdated tips or broken links.

Welcome to the sixteenth edition of email marketing tips on January 20, 2009.

The first edition of email marketing tips in 2009 is packed with information. I am not talking about the number of blog posts that I am featuring. No. I have thrown out almost all that got submitted. What's left is worthy of your attention and time. Lean back, read and enjoy.

At this time I am considering probably changing the schedule to one carnival every three weeks. We will see. I did not make up my mind on this so far. Only one fact remains unchallenged. I tend to keep the quality of this carnival up and will only give you noteworthy articles to read.

Already in 2008 I featured many articles that were not submitted by their authors but were rather found by myself on the internet. I see this trend might continue, because at least 85% of the submitted articles don't qualify according to my set quality standards.
“Less is more in that respect!”

I also will add more video to the blog in general and this carnival as well.

Today's categories are as follows:
  • Copywriting
  • Email Marketing For Bloggers
  • Code Of Practice

Email Stats - Free Versus Help For Johnny Bunko's Career

Daniel Pink
Daniel H. Pink

Now it's offical: “Stay Hungry” has been chosen as the best career advice for lesson 7 of Daniel Pink's book The Adventures of Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You'll Ever Need .

Becky Blanton wins with “Stay Hungry”
It was a land-slide victory for Becky Blanton. She says,
“I'm going to TED, but those whose stories are told on the blog at bookybiz.biz are going with me. In the coming months the blog will be redesigned in order to highlight and showcase those people who are both ‘Staying hungry’ AND ‘Saying Thanks’ as Ed Brenegar and I team up to spread OUR ideas.

In July I'll be blogging and vlogging about TED on that site as well.

My dream is that my win will bring more traffic, attention and help to ALL of you who are not only staying hungry and saying thanks, but are giving back and leaving an imprint in this world. With nearly 5,000 votes cast - the stories and efforts of many charities are getting out. Thank you […]”

Thanks to those of your who have supported my call for help. I know you are many. That brings me to the second part of this blog post.
