Google Everywhere - Even More In The Future

inewidea.com
I hope you enjoy the weekend. It was a great sunny day (as usual) here in Tenerife. When stumbling (↑) (after coming back from the beach) I found a blog post with a well depicted, futuristic view of “How we might be able to use Google® in the future!”

I left a comment as well, ... privacy concerns, and that kind of thoughts. However, I like the idea to have Google in my pocket, always ready to answer my questions.

Here's the post. Check it out:

P.S.: That's probably my shortest blog post ever.

Ranking #1 on Google - Are The Profits Rolling In?

Are you heading for #1 rankings on Google, MSN, and Yahoo? You should, because it definitely helps your business. However, it is only one part of the equation for a successful Internet presence. In the following I'll tell you how I got it, but probably more important I'll tell you about the other factors needed as well. A #1 ranking on any search engine is meaningless unless those other factors are in place, too.

You might have “heard” the recent stories about quick rankings from online videos. I thought I have to test it and it was a happy coincidence that Rich Schefren's 66 second video contest came along at the same time. What a great opportunity to get started.

At first look at the search results page “Number 1 on Google” for the broad matching phrase attention ebiz (Enlarge the thumbnail in the upper left corner of this post). I made this screen shot yesterday. Today, I am on position #2.

You also will notice the 2nd, indented search result. That mainly comes from having a good internal linking strategy on this blog and the fact that the key word “attention” appears on every singe page of this blog. That's how I have setup the promotion for the Attention Age Doctrine. I'll talk more about this later.

X-Robots-Tag Directive in the HTTP Header

X-Robots-Taf Directive I did not write about Web Development for quite a while. After reading an article about the use of X-Robot Tags today, I though it's time, again.

The Basics

You retrieve content from the Web by typing a Web address into your browser and the addressed Web server will send you the requested resource, like a regular HTML Web page, a PDF document, a JPEG image, a video or Flash Movie, a XML file, etc.

The browser and Web server communicate using he HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol ↑) and before the requested data is actually sent, they exchange HTTP Request and HTTP Response headers with information about the document, the browser, and the server. The X-Robots-Tag Directive is an optional element (a directive) of such a HTTP Response Header. It was introduced by Google this year. Now, Yahoo has announced 2 weeks ago, that they support it, too.

You might recall that there is a (X)HTML Meta Tag that allows to restrict the access control for search engine. But they only work for (X)HTML documents. Now the X-Robots-Tag Directive allows the same for any non-(X)HTML resource like video-, audio-files, images, etc.

Tools to Find Out How People Search

Knowing what people are looking for and how they are looking for it, gives you a competitive advantage. You can improve your strategy and become more visible to your prospects. I will show you a great tool that will get you better and faster results.

Let us talk about organic search.

I want you to do a little experiment for yourself, but you will need an “assistant”. This might be a co-worker, a spouse, a friend. Someone who knows how to surf and search on the Web.

Site Search - Do you have one?

If you have a large content site, you must offer site search.

The text input box for the search phrase should be top-right on each page. This is what usability studies suggest. See Jakob Nielsen's Usability Resource Pages and search for “SEARCH”. You'll get a number of interesting results.

Furthermore the text input box should …
