Tools to Find Out How People Search

Knowing what people are looking for and how they are looking for it, gives you a competitive advantage. You can improve your strategy and become more visible to your prospects. I will show you a great tool that will get you better and faster results.

Let us talk about organic search.

I want you to do a little experiment for yourself, but you will need an “assistant”. This might be a co-worker, a spouse, a friend. Someone who knows how to surf and search on the Web.

We want to limit your experiment to one of the three (3) major engines, Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Pick one and search for a product that promises to solve your problem, which are moles in your garden. You want to get rid of them. Pick one product, write down some details (shop, product, price)

Next ask your “assistant” to do the same. It can be a different search engine, though. That does not matter. Don't take more than 10 minutes to do this. The important part is that you are watching your “assistant” over the shoulder. Most likely you will see an approach to tackle the problem, that is very different from yours.

Different keyword associations, etc. Did you think about the phrase your assistant typed in? I did this experiment several times on several topics and was surprised each time.

This little experiment proves the importance of good keyword research. How else would you know, what people are looking for?

The free Overture Keyword Tool has been the community's favourite research tool for a long time, but it has become very unreliable lately. Nowadays it is more offline than online and shows old data from January 2007. Forget it.

Google offers a keyword research tool inside the AdWords Program and also a free one.

The major shortcoming of Google's tool is the absolute lack of numeric results. The graphs don't tell you much about the approximate absolute search volume. Last, but not least, both tools show data from their respective search engine only. You won't get a complete picture.

I suggest that you should use a tool with the following features:
  • Not limited by the boundaries of a single search engine
  • Current data sets
  • Search volume in absolute terms
  • Indicator for the competitiveness of a phrase
  • Comprehensive training material

My recommendation:

Wordtracker is the product that satisfies all of the above requirements. Another good news, Wordtracker is available as free version with limited functionality.

Now it is your time to take action! Get started with the free version of Wordtracker now.

Look at the extensive training material and start to improve your Web site today. Don't miss the Wordtracker Academy (upper-right corner of Wordtracker's page), where you find expert knowledge from recognized SEO experts.
